When people question the value of drug treatment, they can look at any addiction survivor for evidence of the life saving effects. The programs begin by providing release from the actual, physical addiction. Further steps include coping skills and emotional assistance in dealing with stressful situations. Preventing a relapse is a primary goal for any program. Turning to drugs and alcohol for stress relief is very common but can be overcome with the right treatment.

Detox

During the detoxification phase, the patient goes through stressful physical and emotional times. The body will have a severe reaction to the loss of the needed drug. A medical center will often administer other non-addictive drugs to assist the body in overcoming the physical problems of detoxification. This phase includes depression and often violence, which is why medically trained staff are often necessary.

Therapy

Inpatient therapy begins building coping skills. During this time, the person is dealing with feelings of isolation and the need for the drug. Through the sessions, they are able to talk with others dealing with similar issues. This helps by building a support system and teaches stress coping skills that point to healthy outlets like physical activities instead of drugs.

Outpatient Therapy

Outpatient therapy is usually the third step. By this point, the patient has achieved a level of control that satisfies the counselors that the person can reenter society with success in dealing with stresses the right way. During this time, the patient is in frequent contact with their counselor and will attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings for group support. Part of this time is to help promote a concept called sober living. When a person has been addicted to something, it is often difficult for them to avoid that addiction when the stress of life attacks again. Having this support available, helps them turn to people that will encourage them instead of relapsing into their previous addiction.

Time Frame

The length of treatment varies by individual needs. Many programs have set time limits, but can vary the limits depending on the types of addictions the individual experiences. Most people who enter rehab centers have a pretty long treatment plan implemented. Some last a month, while others may last many months before leaving the center.

Relapse

There are many reasons for a relapse. Many people come from situations where drugs are prevalent in their daily lives. Going back to this situation puts an enormous amount of peer pressure on them to relapse. Those that are serious about recovery will seek new family counseling and build a support system that encourages their success.
