Selecting a young adult treatment facility for a loved one can be difficult. So whether seeking help for a loved one or seeking help for yourself there are many things to consider. These are in addition to the normal questions and considerations of seeking inpatient care for anyone. All aspects must be carefully considered.

Inpatient

One question that needs to be answered is whether they need inpatient or outpatient. Some of the considerations for deciding this is how severe the problem is, whether there is anyone available as support, the ability of the patient to be consistent in treatment goals, and how much money and/or insurance is available for funding. These questions must be answered regardless of the age of the person seeking help.

Factors

The support system and family functionality are one of the most important considerations. If there is not a strong support system, or if the family is dysfunctional, inpatient care may be what is needed. However, with a strong support system and/or counselors, outpatient services might be best. Whichever is sought, the person much be committed to following the care plan.

Treatment Styles

With the care for the younger person, there are several styles of treatment facilities. There are those that are similar to a boarding school, where the person attends school and receives psychiatric and addiction treatment as well. There are those that are outdoor treatment, or wilderness style treatment programs. These re physically rigorous, using physical fitness as a treatment style. There are those that are more like a spa, or luxury hotel. Some are more like a psychiatric hospital, with strict regulations and medical management.

Treatment

Any treatment option can be effective. Choices are based on preferences and what is affordable to the one seeking the care. Consideration should definitely be given to what the person receiving the care desires, as well as their ability to be involved in a particular option. If there is the desire to go on to college and/or pursue a career, then the boarding school option might be best. Most options are very minimally concerned with academics when addressing emotional and addiction issues. This could cause a deficit in educational opportunities, adversely affecting the ability to get into college.

Addiction

If there is the added problem of a dysfunctional family, or if the addiction is severe, there may be the necessity of the residential drug rehabilitation. In this way emotional issues can be more directly addressed. Addressing strong emotional aspects and addiction may mean that academic aspects and physical fitness issues may not be as important. Emotional health must be restored first.

Non-Contemporary Approaches

The wilderness or fitness style approaches may well be beneficial to some. The focus on surviving in the wilderness, or the intense physical activity, may help the individual focus on something beside the addictions that are controlling them. The intense activity releases chemicals in the brain that help to give that euphoria and good feeling that sometimes drive addictions.
